About Kimaru Foundation
Background
Kimaru Foundation was established in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period marked by economic uncertainty and social disruption. At a time when many communities were struggling, the founders recognized an opportunity to preserve Uganda’s rich cultural heritage while creating new pathways for community development and economic empowerment.
Built on the philosophy of “Innovating Tradition,” the foundation was founded on the belief that culture should not be left behind by modernization but should evolve in ways that preserve its identity while creating value for present and future generations. The organization began by promoting cultural tourism, heritage preservation, and creative cultural experiences that connected communities, youth, and visitors to Uganda’s diverse traditions.
Through initiatives such as cultural festivals, community engagement programs, and heritage promotion activities, Kimaru Foundation demonstrated that culture can be a powerful driver of education, tourism, economic inclusion, and community pride. Today, the foundation continues to work with communities to transform indigenous knowledge, traditions, arts, food systems, and cultural practices into sustainable opportunities that strengthen livelihoods while preserving Africa’s heritage for generations to come.
Theory of Change
At Kimaru Foundation, we believe that culture, education, and community ownership are powerful tools for breaking cycles of poverty and creating sustainable development.
Many communities possess valuable cultural knowledge, traditions, skills, and heritage assets, yet poverty, limited educational opportunities, and the loss of indigenous knowledge continue to threaten their future. Without intervention, children may leave school, traditional knowledge may disappear, and communities may struggle to benefit from their own cultural resources.
If children are supported to stay in school, youth and women are equipped with skills, communities are empowered to preserve and benefit from their heritage, and cultural enterprises are developed as sustainable sources of income, then communities will achieve greater economic resilience, educational attainment, cultural preservation, and self-reliance.
How We Create Change
Education Support
We provide school fees assistance, scholarships, learning materials, and mentorship to vulnerable children, helping them remain in school and access better opportunities for the future.
Culture & Heritage
We preserve, promote, and revitalize indigenous traditions, languages, arts, food systems, and cultural practices to ensure they remain relevant and valued across generations.
Youth Empowerment
We equip young people with practical skills, leadership opportunities, and cultural knowledge that prepare them for employment, entrepreneurship, and community leadership.
Economic Inclusion
We develop cultural enterprises, tourism initiatives, traditional crafts, agriculture, and creative industries that generate sustainable income for individuals and families.
Community Ownership
We strengthen local governance and ensure communities retain ownership of their cultural assets, knowledge, resources, and the value generated from them.
Our Vision
An Africa where heritage is alive, profitable, and passed to the next generation.
We see communities across the continent where elders, youth, and women earn from culture without losing its meaning.
Our Mission
To upgrade traditional knowledge into sustainable livelihoods for youth and women through enterprise, education, and governance.
We partner with communities to turn culture into income, skills, and ownership.
We are a nonprofit organization empowering indigenous communities through culture, education, and enterprise. By transforming traditional knowledge and heritage into sustainable opportunities, we help youth and women build better livelihoods while preserving culture for future generations.
